Tire Inflation
Pressure on Mobile Cranes:
A change in tire
inflation pressure may constitute "Tire Servicing."
OSHA 1910.177 defines servicing as ["Service" or "servicing"
means the mounting and dismounting of rim wheels, and
related activities such as inflating, deflating, installing,
removing, and handling.]
When a mobile crane operator makes an "On-Rubber" lift tire
inflation pressures may have to be increased over what is
required for normal driving operations. This increase
can put you at risk of not meeting OSHA regulations and may
lead to a serious accident.
Operators sometimes lower tire pressures to soften their
drive around construction sites. Some crane manufacturers
specify lower tire pressures for driving the crane and
greater pressures for On-Rubber lifts. What this means
is that a potential untrained person may end up "servicing"
a single or multi-piece rim wheel without proper barriers
and/or restraining devices.
Keep your job sites safe. Read and follow OSHA 1910.177
"Servicing multi-piece and single piece rim wheels.
